Some art and SPARK.

As you can see in the side bar, I played SPARK again this month. I had the delight and honor of having Amy Souza as my partner. Amy is the mother of Spark, and was my dreamy roommate in London during our senior year of college. She is impossibly glorious. There were a record number of folks participating this round.
I got a wonderful inspiration piece from her-
You can spy our exchange– as well as some art by Jimmy and lots of other great work at

Hope is a Tomato. Art from Writing: Writing from Art… Conclusion
Here is the awesome “inspiration piece” I got from my partner, Caroline. We were paired up by Kismet, I think! I don’t want to spoil the whole thing– I will post a link to the “exhibit page” as soon as Amy has it up. Then you can see what Jimmy did as well as some other friends.
I love this:
Home Grown by Caroline Crawford
Open up.
It’s been a long time.
Now surrender yourself to
the sweet, the sour, the juice, the meat
of this tomato
and remember why you wait
dismiss without even picking up
the rotten tomatoes of November
the cold-storage tomatoes of January
the anemic tomatoes of February
the mealy tomatoes from too-far-away of March
the picked-too-soon tomatoes of May
remember why
you grow your own
choose your seed
plant it
water it
wait for it to sprout
watch it, fret over it, breathe a sigh of relief when the green appears,
let it grow
on its own
and with help, and support, and attention, yes,
but pick a good seed, and a good tomato knows how to grow itself
a good tomato knows it’s a good tomato when it’s in that seed
it knows that in time, with patience, it’s going to be
big, red, round, soft, firm, tender, juicy
it’s going to make you sigh and say
yes, there’s nothing better
yes, that’s what I want
that’s what I waited for
that’s why I don’t buy tomatoes
why I wait.
Taste this tomato and remember
what a tomato is supposed to be
something worth waiting for
something worth savoring
something to celebrate while the juice is dripping down your arm
it’s your dirt, your rain, your patience, your summer,
it’s hope come to fruition,
it’s love, it’s life.
I am totally jonesing for the garden now too! ( I HAVE MY PEAS READY TO GO, PEGALOO!!!)
It was awesome– as soon as I got it in my email, I laughed and read it out loud to Marigold. Remember I had just submitted the garden-esque painting ( posted previously)…. She sat right down and whipped up this:

It took me a lot longer to get my brushes in gear, but here is what I came up with. ( click on for bigger)

It’s some tiny-art. the “bigger” tomato canvas is only 2″ x 2″. I am liking my art smaller these days I think. I am shrinking….
Hope that gives you nice thoughts of spring and summer and the tomatoes in our future!!! Have a hopeful tomato kind of day!
family art days
A couple of them. The girls are working on their artist trading card swap cards. I flung out my inspiration piece for Art from Writing… and now I have a wonderful Writing from Art component to do. That will be this weekend’s work. Here are a few pictures…. I don’t have time for many words tonight…. Just know that Esme is growing. Big. She is still growing the quills. And Marigold is growing the TEETH. Had 3 just fall right out last week. It seems so much weirder to witness as an adult than it did to go through it as a child. I am woefully behind on LIFE. Not sure how I am going to catch up yet– but I don’t think it’s going to happen this week!

Rosemary sure has a thing for the painted hand….
Here is the piece I did for the Art from Writing:Writing from Art Project. I am pretty excited about working on my response piece now. I got a great partner and lovely writing to work with.
Call for Participants— Art from Writing::Writing from Art
You may remember me posting about this awesome project from last go-round. It was so much fun, and a chance to work with some really wonderful artists and writers. I’ll be participating again– please come and join in!!!
Here is the website link to more information on the project– click on image…
The “theme” this time– A Message of Hope
Are you an artist or writer who enjoys or is intrigued by collaborative creativity?? If so, my dear friend Amy Souza is looking for you! If you are interested in participating– you need to let her know by this Friday, February 6th at the latest! You can contact her at
AMY ( CLICK on that!)
A note from Amy–
The next artistic/literary exchange starts on Feb 13th; ends Feb 22nd. Again, pick 2 days (48 hours) in which to work. They don’t have to be contiguous. You send your inspiration piece to your partner (and Amy) by the 13th; send me finished work by the 22nd/23rd. The theme this time is “hope.” Not sure how it’ll work out, but if you have an inspiration piece that says “hope” to you, send that to your partner. If not, just send her whatever you want. But I’m asking everyone to look at their partner’s work through the lens of “hope.” Again, it’s so vague, you can define it how you want, and if nothing comes to you through that lens then forget it and just let the piece inspire you. If you have questions, please contact Amy or ask away here.. just HURRY!
SPARK– Art from Writing::Writing from Art
Over the past month or so I have had the pleasure of taking part in a really interesting art & writing project created by my darling friend Amy Souza.
About the project:
In September 2008, twelve writers and thirteen visual artists embarked upon this Art & Writing Project to find inspiration from one another. To begin, writers sent artists a story or poem, and artists sent writers a painting or photograph. Working over two days only, each person used their partner’s piece as a jumping off point for new work of their own. The results are displayed on this site.
There were 24 contributors from various locales. As of now there is no actual, real-life exhibition planned, all work will be virtually exhibited.
Here were my submissions. If you check out the site, you can read the inspiration and response associated with them. Spend some time exploring the art & writing in the project– you’ll be inspired too! You will find work by Jimmy there as well.
If you are an artist or writer and would like to participate next round– drop Amy a line. I am sure she’d love to hear from you.
