Only Mostly Wordless.

Rollercoaster of life.

Things are pretty much the same with Miss Chloe.  She has settled back into her old meds.  We return to Reston this Friday to see if Dr. A will make any changes.  It is all sooooo. slooow.  The meds take so long to show if they will benefit at all.  The Doctors … well, are so busy.   We are working on some additional options and now have a case manager to help in the crawl towards wellness.   Phone calls today might mean help in a few days or few weeks.   Lists are long. Improvements are so tiny, if  they come at all, and hope is so hard to believe in.  Alas and alack– it is the only way right now. :)   We’re all hanging in just waiting for a grain of sand to shift and movement towards the positive.  Spring is coming– those few nice days were great, weren’t they?  Got the windows open and made friends with a few more stink bugs.  Going to get the garden catalogues out soon and start to think on this years growings.  Also this years groundhog hunting, else the growings are in vain!

Keeping busy– Chloe is still drawing loads of eyes, writing art-letters, keeping at her school work, and skyping with her cousins.  Lil has been sewing and is about to begin embroidering some dish towels.  She is also getting ready to play cello at her first public appearance!  Very excited about that.

I’ve been doing lots of dyeing and spinning.  Went to a small show last weekend and had a nice day.

Jim has been making some amazing tiny dioramas and was a “Pick of the Week” online and made Flickr’s explore.  Check it out.  I think his new stuff is awesome. ( photo stolen from jim’s blog)

Knitting with the pharmaceutically impaired

The Baby Surprise Jacket….

One of those Elizabeth Zimmerman masterpieces.

This ravishing one is by Adrian at Hello Yarn and one of my favorites.  The inimitable  Brooklyn Tweed has one that I LOVE as well here with a baby hat pictured by BT here that would complete the baby-cuteness freak-out.

I am working on this for my upcoming Spring Cloverhill class.  I am making it in cotton and a riot of color.  I really like how the cotton feels after making past ones in various wool mixes . I am using Dawn Adcock’s totally genius sweater notes which makes it such much more straight forward.  EZ is lovely in all of her Zimmermanisms, but it is nice to have it all spelled out logically, with no space for  interpretation of her sometimes quirky instruction. That said, make no mistake that I LOVE her madly.  I love her Cowgirl-knitting sensiblitiy.  I love her no-nonsense simplification of pattern, knitting and life. Her forthright sassiness.  I love that she says things like–

There is no right way to knit; there is no wrong way to knit. The way to knit is the way that suits you, and the way that suits the wool and the pattern and the shape that you are currently working on. Show me any “mistake” and I will show you that it is only a misplaced pattern or an inappropriate technique. There are patterns that include dropped stitches and twisted stitches. There are projects which should be as tight as you can possibly knit; there are others where you have to relax to the point of lethargy in order to make them loose enough. I’ve not yet found a pattern which includes a split stitch; this is the only real mistake I know.

The BSJ is simple enough in its pattern to make it an easy knit, as long as you don’t mind counting.  It is also interesting enough in its brilliant origami construction and gauge versatility that it makes you want to make it over and over.  Plus, it’s just a damn fine sweater!

A Zimmerman pattern is so fun to teach in a class because it  provides an opportunity to think about your knitting. To think about Knitting ( the BIG K), in fact.  To loosen up your ideas about what is proper-technique and form, to push the conventional knittng rules with “it just makes common sense” wisdom.  To think outside of the usual gauge an row-count box.  Nothing like a little Zimmermania to breathe new life into your knitting.  Give one of her books or patterns a try if you haven’t. Be free!

Esme thinks EZ is the knitting Duchess as well.  While I have been recuperating, Little Ms. Prickles has been spending a lot of time hanging out on me as seen below.  She likes to hang-out in my knitting– to curl up in whatever I am working on.  She is very proprietary about it sometimes… grabbing it and trying to drag it away from me.  All those needles on her, it’s only right that she has a knitting fixation.  She’s getting big, right??

There is a gardening super-icon that I love similarly to EZ.  It’s just about time to start going on and on about things dirty and green, n’est ce pas?  I’ll sing praises of her and her wise ways soon.

xo.

Do you like my hat? Yes, I like your hat.

A brief break from my dizzying wheel.

Here’s Esme in the hat she  made for the sequel to Brazil.

Crazy little beasty.

Esme!!

She’s 12 weeks old now.  She has grown quite a bit– still losing millions of baby quills.  When will it end?

I am still really digging her.  She comes out at night during homework and my computer time.  Everyone takes a turn playing with her or holding her wherever they are.  She has a mighty appetite for meal worms.  Gross, right?  She crunches them right up!!  You can just call her Ol’ Meal-Worm-Breath!

Just look at that squinchy little face!

Here, she is showing off her new behemouth size!

Late edition:

In honor of her birthday, her is the most wonderful little film sent by dear Pegaloo-of the-eggaloos

Ravelry Gnome Swap

We just had a really great gnome swap over on Ravelry.  Here is what I received from my lovely partner Emily

I LOVE these gnomes!!  The yarn is delicious– dyed with Elderberries.  The roll is a huge bunch of wool felt– which I was so in need of.  So much fun.

I sent her Mr. Cedar and his hedgie friend.  I think he’s going to like it with her.  I was in a bit of an amigurumi spin there for a while… It’s sort of addictive! The Hedgehog lives in the mushroom on left.  The top flips up and buttons closed.

It is time to sign up for the Spring Swap if your are interested! If you are not on Ravelry and would like to participate, please leave a comment here. Hurry though– partners  go out this weekend!
