Knitting with the pharmaceutically impaired

The Baby Surprise Jacket….

One of those Elizabeth Zimmerman masterpieces.

This ravishing one is by Adrian at Hello Yarn and one of my favorites.  The inimitable  Brooklyn Tweed has one that I LOVE as well here with a baby hat pictured by BT here that would complete the baby-cuteness freak-out.

I am working on this for my upcoming Spring Cloverhill class.  I am making it in cotton and a riot of color.  I really like how the cotton feels after making past ones in various wool mixes . I am using Dawn Adcock’s totally genius sweater notes which makes it such much more straight forward.  EZ is lovely in all of her Zimmermanisms, but it is nice to have it all spelled out logically, with no space for  interpretation of her sometimes quirky instruction. That said, make no mistake that I LOVE her madly.  I love her Cowgirl-knitting sensiblitiy.  I love her no-nonsense simplification of pattern, knitting and life. Her forthright sassiness.  I love that she says things like–

There is no right way to knit; there is no wrong way to knit. The way to knit is the way that suits you, and the way that suits the wool and the pattern and the shape that you are currently working on. Show me any “mistake” and I will show you that it is only a misplaced pattern or an inappropriate technique. There are patterns that include dropped stitches and twisted stitches. There are projects which should be as tight as you can possibly knit; there are others where you have to relax to the point of lethargy in order to make them loose enough. I’ve not yet found a pattern which includes a split stitch; this is the only real mistake I know.

The BSJ is simple enough in its pattern to make it an easy knit, as long as you don’t mind counting.  It is also interesting enough in its brilliant origami construction and gauge versatility that it makes you want to make it over and over.  Plus, it’s just a damn fine sweater!

A Zimmerman pattern is so fun to teach in a class because it  provides an opportunity to think about your knitting. To think about Knitting ( the BIG K), in fact.  To loosen up your ideas about what is proper-technique and form, to push the conventional knittng rules with “it just makes common sense” wisdom.  To think outside of the usual gauge an row-count box.  Nothing like a little Zimmermania to breathe new life into your knitting.  Give one of her books or patterns a try if you haven’t. Be free!

Esme thinks EZ is the knitting Duchess as well.  While I have been recuperating, Little Ms. Prickles has been spending a lot of time hanging out on me as seen below.  She likes to hang-out in my knitting– to curl up in whatever I am working on.  She is very proprietary about it sometimes… grabbing it and trying to drag it away from me.  All those needles on her, it’s only right that she has a knitting fixation.  She’s getting big, right??

There is a gardening super-icon that I love similarly to EZ.  It’s just about time to start going on and on about things dirty and green, n’est ce pas?  I’ll sing praises of her and her wise ways soon.

xo.

Gnome break and update.

Hey y’all.

I am busy busy busy over here in the gnomegarden, working on some exciting new developments.

I’ve gotten a bunch of wool dyed and just gotten in a box of more exotic stuff that I am excited to dye and work into my spinnings.

Speaking of– I’ll be appearing live and fibery at Cloverhill Yarn Shop on Sunday from 1-5.  First I’ll be doing a spinning demonstration and selling loads of gnome-made things– Yarn, Jewelry, and a little bit of all the magic I can gather. IT ALL MUST GO! :) MAD DAWN’S Yarn event. lol.  Really though, come on in and see me– or send friends if you think they might be interested.  At 4pm I’ll be teaching a class on needle felting Holiday Ornaments.  There is still room in the class!

I can’t even begin to think about Christmas yet– which is sort of sad being that is so close.  It’ll come to me, like a mack truck too.

Other news in my world is that I am going to be back at Cloverhill during the day, beginning after the Holidays.  I’ll be there Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays.  I’ll also be teaching a knitting class at the Painting Workshop/ Reisterstown on Thursdays.  Let me know if you know of anyone that might be interested!  Lastly– The Painting Workshop will also be hosting a Sit and Knit night now.  (Well it won’t actually begin until after the Holidays.)  Sunday nights from 6-8 come on over and knit, chat and laugh!  Sure to be entertaining and you’ll get work done on thos projects.  I’ll be the knitter-in-residence to help with any questions or project assistance.  Please put it on you calendars if you are local.  It can be crochet or any old thing really– just come hang out with me!  Let me know if you are interested.

I leave you with this little flick that one of my gnome-making comrades on Ravelry shared.  It is sooo sweet

Baaaaaaahhhhhhck to Black, light sabers and voodoo dolls.

It has been a strangely wonderful week here in the life-garden. Full of polarities. Contemplative and chaotic. Orderly and disorderly. Exciting new things and nostalgic old ones. Changes. Lots of new ideas for life, plans, projects. Up, down and around on the dragon coaster.

Had a fun day of big adventures with sweet mama e and her boy– my fairie-god-son. It was a STAR WARS-a-palooza out in the back yard. There were light sabers flying — all sorts of Chewy mayhem. Rosemary wore her Queen Amadala dress and Marigold was working a Harry Potter robe, which was BLACK so she ended up being a SITH or some evil character just by default :) . She was trying to carve a light saber out of a big stick with a butter knife. The vision of youth.
Fun
times and nice people.

Good, really good. AND it is March 1 which means SPRING and SOOOOOOOOON! This time of year always gets me a little crazed with possibilities. The SUN is coming back. I start to think about the garden and summer vacation and warmth. Art ideas, house projects. Grackles and hummingbirds.

Had a needle felting class today that was really fun. Had a harpist in class; Kim :) . You just don’t come across many of the harpies. Again, really nice people.

I love seeing people be overtaken by the zen of needle felting , and I always have so much fun. Here are todays little births–

This past wonky week.

Lots of stitch markers. I will have them up in a proper sort of gallery page when the wizard is back in

Lastly, I had the pleasure of having the greatest class on Saturday. I taught an intro to needle felting class, and had such wonderful, nice folks. We did cookie cutter style, and a sculptural sheep. Such nice people, and it was so much fun! Here they are–
