Harvest Time and Family Fun
Here in the Merry-Land, this past weekend was so gorgeous. The weather was beautiful, the temperature was pleasant, we had sister Matryoshka and her fae poppets visiting. Just a great time.
Started with a family art night complete with special guest Javajem. We all worked diligently on our sketchbook exchange books while the combined poppets worked on Peggyellen’s splatter maps. Marigold took this picture of Jody reading to Rosie the reading tyrant. The photo seems to be one of her ART PHOTO series. That or she was at that nice bunny-wine that Jody brought! Maybe this is just how things were that night. It’s so hard to tell around here.
We had a great weekend of harvest fun!
Saturday we went to Weber’s Cider Mill Farm and romped in the Autumnal splendor that it offers. Have you ever had an apple cider slushee and a still warm cider doughnut?? Oh my stars, it’s fantastical! Our favorite thing about this time of year there is the death-defying-hay-slide, hands down. Check it out. The kids quickly assess which of the 3 slides is the slickest, grab their burlap saque and just go over-and-over.
This only shows about 2/3 of the slide.
These slides are BIG and FAST. They are good for loads of fun and the perfect lead up to the previously mentioned slushee. Also at the farm, big and small sized hay mazes, a hay-rack ride, apple picking, pumpkins akimbo, even an old-time water pump race track game.
Of course there are farm animals, and a really great market. I am probably leaving out a bunch of other activities. If you are local, I highly recommend a visit. It is a great time and a good way to support on of our local farms.
In the upper corner of the bunny barn I spied this modern day descendent of the good Charlotte. I half expected to see ” SOME BUNNY” but alas and alack, just a really BIG nice web.
Sunday was another lovely adventure. Piled into the gnomemobile and headed up rt 83 to Glen Rock PA for the Mother Earth Harvest Fair. This was the 4th annual.
Combining the charm of an old-fashioned country fair, timeless traditional arts and crafts, and cutting-edge advances in green building and renewable energy, the MEHF is a celebration and showcase of healthy, sustainable, and balanced living in the Chesapeake bioregion.
As Jimmy says “Words cannot describe the awesome….” Spoutwood Farm has got to be one of my all-time favorite places. It is home of the magical Fairie Festival each may. It’s just like a little hunk o’ heaven there. Rolling hills, woodsy in all the right places, lots of little pockets of space holding magical environments for the kids. A CSA farm and home to a community of many glowing, nature-folk, It has a vibe that just envelops all who enter. If my accompanying kids would just relax a bit… Mama would have a much more blissed-out experience.
It was a great time nonetheless. Again, if you are local-ish I encourage you to check out any of Spoutwoods events and their CSA offerings.

Them bones.
Chard in the CSA garden
hay bale green house
a booth of just carnivorous plants
2 lovely and so friendly Shetlands.
Circle of life quote of the day: “Mama come look at the SAD thing. It has SKIN on the back”
So sweet. If you had a neck like that wouldn’t you wrap it around someone you liked too?
Always good advice.
Can’t wait to go again!
