Knitting with the pharmaceutically impaired
The Baby Surprise Jacket….
One of those Elizabeth Zimmerman masterpieces.
This ravishing one is by Adrian at Hello Yarn and one of my favorites. The inimitable Brooklyn Tweed has one that I LOVE as well here with a baby hat pictured by BT here that would complete the baby-cuteness freak-out.
I am working on this for my upcoming Spring Cloverhill class. I am making it in cotton and a riot of color. I really like how the cotton feels after making past ones in various wool mixes . I am using Dawn Adcock’s totally genius sweater notes which makes it such much more straight forward. EZ is lovely in all of her Zimmermanisms, but it is nice to have it all spelled out logically, with no space for interpretation of her sometimes quirky instruction. That said, make no mistake that I LOVE her madly. I love her Cowgirl-knitting sensiblitiy. I love her no-nonsense simplification of pattern, knitting and life. Her forthright sassiness. I love that she says things like–
There is no right way to knit; there is no wrong way to knit. The way to knit is the way that suits you, and the way that suits the wool and the pattern and the shape that you are currently working on. Show me any “mistake” and I will show you that it is only a misplaced pattern or an inappropriate technique. There are patterns that include dropped stitches and twisted stitches. There are projects which should be as tight as you can possibly knit; there are others where you have to relax to the point of lethargy in order to make them loose enough. I’ve not yet found a pattern which includes a split stitch; this is the only real mistake I know.
The BSJ is simple enough in its pattern to make it an easy knit, as long as you don’t mind counting. It is also interesting enough in its brilliant origami construction and gauge versatility that it makes you want to make it over and over. Plus, it’s just a damn fine sweater!
A Zimmerman pattern is so fun to teach in a class because it provides an opportunity to think about your knitting. To think about Knitting ( the BIG K), in fact. To loosen up your ideas about what is proper-technique and form, to push the conventional knittng rules with “it just makes common sense” wisdom. To think outside of the usual gauge an row-count box. Nothing like a little Zimmermania to breathe new life into your knitting. Give one of her books or patterns a try if you haven’t. Be free!
Esme thinks EZ is the knitting Duchess as well. While I have been recuperating, Little Ms. Prickles has been spending a lot of time hanging out on me as seen below. She likes to hang-out in my knitting– to curl up in whatever I am working on. She is very proprietary about it sometimes… grabbing it and trying to drag it away from me. All those needles on her, it’s only right that she has a knitting fixation. She’s getting big, right??

There is a gardening super-icon that I love similarly to EZ. It’s just about time to start going on and on about things dirty and green, n’est ce pas? I’ll sing praises of her and her wise ways soon.
xo.

wonky! Pointy! Prickly!
I love that word more than most.
wonky. wonky. wonky.
Random knitting, gnoming and hedgehogging photos.
I am getting a cold and snurfley. NOT smurfley. Then I’d have my BLUE head on.

Lil’ Rosie-gnome in one of my first handspun Loop batts. Yuuuummmm.

A Gnomish hat for a person far away. Knit from my own concoction of wool, bamboo and silk– plus some sparkly fairy stuff. Pattern courtesy of Matryoshka-saves-the-day– Jil Eaton’s Elf Cap.

The super cute arigurumi Hedgie– Pattern by AmyGaines

What’s in the bag?
Oh her baby-gypsie-highness, of course!

Nice family gathering. Marigold’s has no eyes, no eyes at all. Where’s my button box….
I am pretty sure this is my actual brain.
Have a click on the image to read all about it. Pretty amazing, and lovely, and ocd.
I have some posting to do at long last… It’ll be oozing up here soon.
The Answer to all sorts of UPSET.
Well, it took me so long to get a WordPress issue worked out by my Technical Guru that you completely missed my depression post. Good thing, probably.
You also missed me getting a black eye from the Gnomemobile. Yep, the back hatch smashed down right on my eye-bone. Looks like I have really nice red-violet eyeshadow on my right eye only. As Erin say’s ” It makes my green eye POP!” No pictures for you, my bloggarazzi. Just imagine it.
Pop, pop, pop.
It was American Education week at the poppets’ school. Good times and happiness with teachers. That’s a good feeling. Everybodys’ happy this year…. really good.
Getting ready to head to the Outer Banks of NC for Thanksgiving with the family. I am packing up my knitting. Working on–
1. Grey alpaca handspun neckwarmer in a cool herringbone stitch.
2. My Reader’s Wrap in Green-Gawgeous Soho Tweed. A color which combines the most complicated palette of greens with flecks of purple thrown in and comes out this fabulous yarn numbered 333. For some really dumb reason Tahki discontinued the color. Really dumb.
3. Knitted babes. These cute knitted dolls. They have been partially made for a year or so now in my basket. Time for them to get born. and Wardrobes made.
4. A few other neckwarmers.
I don’t think I really have room for too much in the Fit smallest car ever. But I will stuff it around me. I have gotten so addicted to spinning that I am having trouble imagining leaving that home…. hmmmn, there’s that thing called a spindle right?
Ok. So HERE IT IS. Yesterday my Marigold introduced me to the answer to ALL PROBLEMS. She told me it would make me feel better. She tried to show me it for 2 days, but I kept getting mad and turning it off. There’s this marvelous song. It’s in this movie. Watch it. Sing it. Change your life. I believe it is taking a seat beside the beloved CAKE SONG in the Family Soundtrack Collection. Enjoy.
Sparkle– SPARKLE!!

Yarn, glorious YARN!
Got some new yarns up on Etsy this evening. You can visit Http://www.gnomegarden.etsy.com to see them.
Got some knitting to share as well. Just one– or 2 photos tonight. More tomorrow.
Here’s a hat set made for a friend’s birthday. I have been making neckwarmers for a sale tomorrow… busy busy busy. Got a mess of stuff on the needles and more spinnings in mind.
Rosie is yelling “Give me some EGGNOG” for the picture. It was the bribe that got her to stand for it.
That set looks FINE with owlie pj’s!
